How Do I Know If I Can Be Hypnotized?

A common myth about hypnosis is that it’s something done to you. In reality, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. If you’ve ever wondered, “Do I have the kind of mind that can be hypnotized?” the answer is almost certainly yes—but the experience depends on your specific “hypnotic blueprint.”

The “Trance” Test: Do You Do These Things?

You don’t need a crystal ball to know if you’re hypnotizable. You likely enter natural hypnotic states several times a day without realizing it. You are a prime candidate for hypnosis if:

– You experience “Highway Hypnosis”. Have you ever driven home and realized you don’t remember the last five minutes? Your subconscious took the wheel while your conscious mind drifted.

– You get lost in stories: If you cry during movies or lose all track of time while reading a great book, you have a high capacity for “absorption”- key trait of suggestibility.

– You are a vivid dreamer: Being able to visualize sights, sounds, and smells, like a virtual movie, in your mind’s eye makes it much easier for a hypnotist or hypnotherapist to guide your subconscious.

The Science of Suggestibility

Psychologists often use the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale to measure how easily someone enters a trance.

The Highs (10-15%): These “somnambulists” can enter a deep trance quickly and may even experience sensory changes (like feeling cold on command).

The Middles (70-80%): The vast majority of people. You might not feel “out of it,” but your body relaxes, and your mind becomes much more open to positive suggestions.

The Lows (10%): These individuals tend to be highly analytical or have a strong need for conscious control. Even then, “low suggestibility” often just means you need a different induction technique.

Do you really need to measure hypnotic depth?

No.  While a scale may be necessary at a university or college, the truth is that hypnotic depth is directly dependent on need.  This means that the greater the desire to create change, the greater the likelihood that hypnosis will work.

In fact, you desire the hypnosis to work.  Belief + imagination + conviction + expectation = Hypnotic trance.

The “Finger Lock” Mini-Experiment

Try this right now: Interlace your fingers tightly, palms together. Imagine they are glued, taped, and bolted shut. Try to pull them apart while *simultaneously* telling yourself, “they are stuck.”

*If you felt a momentary hesitation or a physical sense of resistance before they pulled apart, congratulations—you just responded to a hypnotic suggestion!

The Only Real Barrier

There is only one thing that can truly prevent hypnosis: **Resistance.** Because hypnosis requires cooperation, if you are afraid of losing control or don’t trust the process, your “critical faculty” will stay on high alert, blocking the state.

*Important Message

Always choose a hypnotist or hypnotherapist who offers a Free Screening or Free Consultation.  These are the most reliable practitioners.  They will educate you about hypnosis, answer all your questions and do a hypnotic test to see if you are a good candidate for hypnosis.  During this process, you will learn if this practitioner is a good fit for you!

Your hypnotic depth and experience will be more effective if you feel comfortable.  The free screening or consultation achieves this for you.  The hypnotist or hypnotherapist can then easily develop a personalized program that will fit your time and budget.

Final Thoughts

Hypnosis is a skill, not a superpower. Just like some people are naturally flexible while others have to practice yoga to touch their toes, almost everyone can improve their hypnotic response with practice and the right environment.

Curious to try it for yourself? The best way to know for sure is to experience a professional session tailored to your unique personality.

Call now for your Free Screening Online or In Person to discover if hypnosis is right for you.
