Will I Lose Control During Hypnosis?

Will I Lose Control During Hypnosis? (The Truth Behind the Fear of Going Under)

If the thought of booking a hypnotherapy or hypnosis session sends a tiny shiver down your spine, you are in good company.

For most people considering hypnosis, the hesitation rarely comes down to cost, scheduling, or skepticism. It almost always stems from a single, quiet dread:

“What if I lose control? What if I black out, reveal my deepest secrets, or wake up doing something I didn’t agree to?”

Thanks to classic movie thrillers, stage performers, and cartoon villains swinging pocket watches, we’ve been conditioned to view hypnosis as a form of mind control. But when it comes to clinical hypnotherapy and typical hypnosis sessions, the reality is the exact opposite.

Here is what really happens to your consciousness, your will, and your control under hypnosis.

The Big Fear: “Will I Lose Consciousness?”

In short: No. Hypnosis is not anesthesia, and it is not sleep.

During a clinical session, you do not “go under” into blackness or surrender awareness. In fact, brain imaging studies show that during hypnotic trance, certain regions of the brain—specifically those associated with focused attention and sensory processing—are more active, not less.

You remain fully conscious the entire time. You will hear every word the practitioner says, the sound of the traffic outside the window, and the hum of the air conditioner. If you felt an itch on your nose, you would scratch it. If an alarm went off, you would open your eyes, stand up, and walk out of the room.

Hypnosis feels remarkably similar to common everyday states:

  • Getting so absorbed in a gripping novel that you don’t notice someone walking into the room.
  • Driving along a familiar stretch of highway and realizing your mind drifted, yet you safely navigated every curve and stoplight.
  • Daydreaming right before your alarm rings in the morning—deeply relaxed, yet completely awake.

Who Is Really in the Driver’s Seat?

A common misconception is that the hypnotherapist takes the steering wheel while you get shoved into the passenger seat.

In clinical reality, all hypnosis is fundamentally self-hypnosis. The therapist acts like a GPS navigator, suggesting routes and turns. You remain the driver with your hands firmly on the wheel, deciding whether or not to take those turns.

Your subconscious mind possesses an innate protective barrier often called the “critical factor.” It does not shut down during trance; it simply becomes more cooperative. If a therapist offered a suggestion that violated your moral code, core values, or self-interest, your mind would immediately reject it, and you would naturally emerge from trance.

You cannot be made to confess private secrets, hand over bank details, or act against your principles.

Questions for Thoughtful Introspection

Before deciding if fear is keeping you from a breakthrough, take a moment to reflect on these questions:

  1. Where in your life are you already operating on “autopilot”?
Notice the habits you repeat without thinking—reaching for a phone, reacting with anxiety in meetings, craving sugar when stressed. If your subconscious already runs these scripts without your conscious permission, isn’t that where the real loss of control is happening?
  2. What would it feel like to stop fighting your own mind?
How much daily energy do you spend using sheer willpower to battle cravings, fear, or self-doubt? What might happen if your subconscious and conscious mind were pulling in the exact same direction?
  3. Is your need for control protecting you, or keeping you stuck?
Sometimes our fear of “letting go” is the very shield keeping old anxieties, phobias, and limiting beliefs alive. What could you accomplish if you allowed yourself to be supported?

Reclaim Your Focus, Reclaim Your Control

Hypnosis isn’t about giving up your power—it’s about finally accessing it. It is a systematic, grounded way to step out of the daily noise, clear out outdated mental scripts, and align your subconscious impulses with your conscious goals.

You remain awake, aware, and completely in charge from start to finish.
